Proper foundation care is an often overlooked part of home maintenance. I’d like to remind everyone of the importance of the foundation to the longevity of your home and the prevention of costly repairs. Inspect the foundation around your home regularly, especially during hot and dry periods. Look next to the concrete at ground level, where the soil meets the concrete. If you see a separation there, you need to irrigate your foundation. The most economical way to achieve this is to place soaker hoses around your foundation, 12” to 16” away from the foundation and water 2 or 3 times a week for about 30 minutes. This should allow the soil to gradually expand back to the concrete. This will keep the water from getting to the grade beams and eroding the support for them, which could cause major problems. This easy and economical step could save you a major headache down the road. Stay Cool!
